Hartness House is one of the most unique country inns in
the United States. Its reputation as a historical place is, in fact,
world-wide. This is due entirely to the genius of James Hartness.
More than 100 years ago Mr. and Mrs. James Hartness lived in this
house, enjoying life in a community made famous his technical achievements.
in 1904 at a cost of $39,450 by James Hartness as a
family home, the house is an example of Newport shingle
and stone architecture, rarely found in this part of New
England. Complementing the main building is a unique
stone tea house in the backyard.
