The Charles Lindberg Room
In 1927 after having just completed his famous trans-Atlantic non-stop air flight to Paris, Charles Lindberg was a guest at the Hartness House Inn. In honor of his visit, our largest guest room is name after him. Few people remember that "Lucky Lindy" was over 6 foot four inches, a tall gent indeed, and this room features a king-sized bed for our guests.
The Charles Lindbergh room overlooks the Hartness Telescope Observatory. Built in 1910 by James Hartness, his 10" Equatorial Tracking Telescope was a sensation of the time. For the first time, a private individual single-handedly built a refractor telescope capable of accurately tracking the stars celestial movements.
This room offers a king-sized bed; color cable TV and DVD player; individually controlled heat and AC; private bath; digital telephone with voice mail and automated wake-up service; Clock radio and CD player, and large, bright sunny windows. We offer several popular Ceremony Locations with an Officiant
You tell us your preference for your ceremony, indoors or outdoors, and we will suggest several locations.
Our most popular indoor wedding ceremony location is by the Library Grand fireplace. The Library is steeped in tradition and history. As governor of Vermont, James Hartness would conduct state business in front of the fireplace in the Library that he used for official state business. Arduous talks of politics, back-room dealings, and financial matters now give way to matters of marriage. Cozy for just two, we can seat up to thirty friends and family if you chose our ElopePlus package.
Also in the Library, you can chose to have your nuptials by the Great Arch window. In 1921, after being elected governor of Vermont, James Hartness placed his governor's desk directly below the actual lamp that hangs there to this day. Wouldn't it be interesting to know the history that this lamp shone on.
For outdoor wedding ceremonies, we offer our wedding gardens resplendent with an Euro-style fountain, sweeping lawns, and a columned pergola covered in vines. Lovely and romantically greenscaped, our best picturesque moments are created here. Even on the hottest days, the tall walnut and maple trees shade our couples from the heat.
Adjacent to the wedding gardens is our Stone chapel. Formerly known as the Tea House, it was built in 1904 by James Hartness as a gift to his wife Lena. Lena Hartness loved gardening and quickly surrounded the Tea House with lovely local flowers and plants. Lena was quite the personable individual and would host tea parties for the spouses of Mr. Hartness' government and business acquaintances.
Our wedding officiants will preside over your ceremony. They will happily customize it to suit your needs. Once you have reserved your wedding date, one of our officiants will contact you by telephone and discuss details and answer any questions you may have. Our officiants will incorporate your vows if any into the ceremony. Feel free to request any special readings, poetry, psalms or verses that you prefer.
